FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

Jacksonville Jazz Hall of Fame 2013 Inductees:

Lisa Kelly (Scott)

Performer, composer, band leader, adjudicator, volunteer and mentor, jazz vocalist Lisa Kelly has been a highly respected jazz artist for over 25 years. Winning an unprecedented five DownBeat Magazine awards for best vocalist/original composition, the vocal position with the 2000 IAJE Sisters In Jazz Combo, and profiled among 320 of today’s international jazz artists in the 2010 book, "The New Face of Jazz," Kelly has performed nationally and internationally throughout Europe and Canada. She has remained a strongly committed supporter for the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, and a very popular festival musical artist since her first appearance in 1988. Volunteering for several years for the Great American Piano Competition, Kelly initiated a 3 night "Jacksonville Jazz Jam Session" in 1997, gathering support from area sponsors to again feature the piano contestants and to offer a musical forum for jazz musicians of all ages and experience levels to ‘jam’ with the seasoned festival artists. So popular was the session, that it became an official part of the festival in 2000, now annually known as the "‘Round Midnight Jam Sessions" and still hosted by her Kelly/Scott Quintet. Kelly has served as a tape listening judge for the piano completion, a resource for jazz education, an outspoken advocate for the continuance of the festival, and has co-presented festival outreach performance clinics for children. Kelly earned her B.M. in Jazz Studies in 2000 from the University of North Florida Jazz Program, under the tutelage of professors Bunky Green, Jack Peterson, Dr. Bill Prince, Bruce Silva and Don Zentz, all of whom she has since performed with. Other notables she has appeared with include Ed Calle, Larry Elgart, Cyrus Chestnut, Slide Hampton, John Lee, Yotam Silberstein, Steve Davis, Jane Monheit, Lynne Arriale, Danny Gottlieb, and Arturo Sandoval. Teaching music theory and vocal jazz at LaVilla SOTA, Douglas Anderson High SOTA, vocal jazz & music business in interim at UNF, annually at UNF’s North Florida Jazz Camp and privately at the First Coast Community Music School, Kelly has become a well known state-wide vocal jazz mentor, presenting jazz clinics at schools and major music conventions, pioneering a new state-wide high school jazz vocal soloist competition and mentoring the first student vocalists to sing with the All-state jazz band at the annual FMEA Conference. She has co-released 5 well received CD recordings with trumpeter JB Scott, co-leading several pro groups that have regularly performed on the festival, and is the featured vocalist with the St. Johns River City Big Band. For her many years of quality performances as a jazz artist, promotional leadership of jazz in the region, mentoring of the next generation of jazz musicians, and continued support of the festival, Lisa Kelly (Scott) has been inducted into the 2013 Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame.

Theresa O'Donnell Price

For nearly two decades, as the City of Jacksonville's head of special events, Theresa O’Donnell Price made unparalleled contributions to the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. Her passion, energy and professionalism gave life to the event and assured enjoyment by all in attendance. Visitors to the festival enjoyed the music, the food and the pomp and circumstance.
In 2003, Price brought the festival back to its fans by bringing world-class entertainment. Her mark on the event started with her bold vision to move the festival from Metropolitan Park to downtown Jacksonville. Changing the festival format into a vibrant street festival setting allowed fans to explore downtown and provide an economic impact to the area businesses, hotels and restaurants. Price brought her vision to life, staking the festival Memorial Day weekend with multiple stages of entertainment that expanded the programming of the festival to include multiple jazz genres so that there was something for everyone at the festival. This expansion also brought better opportunities to highlight local jazz talent and youth performances by Jacksonville-area schools which showcased young performers of the future and promoted jazz education.
She also expanded the Jazz Jam, VIP seating options, Wine Tastings, Art Shows and the Jazz Brunch while creating the Jazz Parade through the downtown streets as well as exhibits and displays using downtown venues and vacant buildings to bring the festival to life. Under her leadership, the growth and development of the festival increased attendance from 10-12,000 attendees at Metropolitan Park, to more than 150,000 fans. Because of her vision, Jacksonville boasts what has been said to be the largest free jazz festival in the nation, with fans filling hotel rooms, restaurants and bars and planning their vacations around the festival. For her passionate leadership and vision as well as her numerous contributions to the evolution of the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Theresa O’Donnell Price has been inducted into the 2013 Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame.
